My family had a jam-packed weekend, including my son with two soccer games in the Chicago suburbs. But I couldn’t miss the wedding of one of my mentees, Tyler Dragon, in a suburb of Phoenix.
I flew in Saturday morning and flew out on a red-eye — and I relished every moment in between.
On the hour-long drive to the wedding, I reflected on our relationship, which started about 9 1/2 years ago, and I marveled at how far he’s come.
Tyler applied to be a writing intern when I was the Managing Editor of Thrive Sports, a startup sports website dedicated to inspirational stories and individuals. He was raw as a reporter and writer, partly because he was track athlete at both UCLA and Howard University.
So I asked him, “Are you coachable and are you willing to work really hard?”
